St. Augustine will celebrate 450 years of history in 2013 through 2015!
“St. Augustine, St. Augustine… prettiest little town you’ve ever seen,” are the opening lyrics to a song written by popular local singer/songwriter, Joe Mark, and so very true it is.
Strolling the city’s narrow cobblestone or brick-paved streets, framed with buildings centuries old, and passing ancient cemeteries with souls perhaps escaping their bounds and wafting on the breezes, has a magical way of transporting visitors back to a different era, to discover our nation’s true beginnings.
Established in 1565, Saint Augustine was “up for urban renewal” when the Pilgrims founded the Plymouth colony in 1620, 55 years later. Through centuries of Spanish and British rule, the town was ravaged, pillaged, burned and rebuilt over…and over…and over, its residents determined to persevere and carry on. Many descendants of these earliest settlers still reside here today, proud of their heritage and protective of their history.
Many remains of the rich history of the city still exist, and every year millions of visitors seek to immerse themselves in the ambience the historic buildings and sites offer. In addition, there are museums, religious locations, galleries, shops with eclectic wares from all over the world, restaurants offering any kind of food one’s taste buds would desire, magnificent Flagler College, continuing fairs and festivals, and the most beautiful and user-friendly beaches in the country. What more to seek for the vacation of a lifetime?
Recent accolades for St. Augustine include being named one of National Geographic magazine’s “Top ten locations in the WORLD to see holiday lights,” and ninth in Trip Advisor’s “Top fifteen destinations in the US on the rise.”
Visit St Augustine once, and you will want to return…and return…and return for its myriad attractions and celebrations, and perhaps to make it either your winter home or your permanent residence.
About the Authors: Former Innkeepers Robert and Elsie Carr
Robert Carr and Elsie Hedetniemi Carr left the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC in August of 1980, searching for the perfect location, and the perfect building which could be restored and opened as a “Bed & Breakfast” inn. Their dream was realized with the discovery of St. Augustine, and a nineteen-bedroom hotel built before the 1880s, which had deteriorated into something just above a flophouse. Hence, the Kenwood Inn was born, the first “B&B” in the “Nation’s Oldest City.”
Their second venture was a large 1840s manor house, parts of which were literally falling down, in the charming historic town of Pendleton, SC. Liberty Hall Inn with eleven rooms and three dining areas was established. After its sale, they returned home to St. Augustine. They have remained involved in the hospitality field by consulting, writing articles on “B&Bs,” and inn-sitting on occasion.
Elsie is retired from real estate, while Robert remains an active Broker-Associate/Realtor. It will be their pleasure to assist you in realizing your dream of owning a home in our fair city, and they welcome your inquiries at carr4homes@aol.com. Robert is also a masterful photographer; visit his three galleries at www.carrfineportraiture.com. Elsie’s novel, The Legend of Abigail Rose, is available on this guidebook’s website.
Hearty thanks to the management of the St Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum for their assistance in making this guide possible. Don’t miss a visit to this exciting museum downtown, and enjoy your own treasure hunt - we guarantee you’ll be glad you did!
“Cheers!”
Elsie and Robert, proud and passionate residents of St Augustine….
